Orthodontics for Children

While there is no set age to begin orthodontic treatment, the American Association of Orthodontists® does recommend that children receive an initial orthodontic screening by age 7. At this age, children have developed enough that any potential orthodontic problems should be easy to diagnose, and our dentists will be able to determine if and when orthodontic treatment should begin. Early treatment also allows us to:

  • Correct and guide jaw growth
  • Regulate the width of your child’s upper and lower dental arches
  • Create more space for crowded teeth
  • Help ensure the permanent teeth erupt properly
  • Prevent the need for tooth extractions in the future
  • Correct thumb sucking
  • Help improve minor speech problems.

Early orthodontic treatment can often prevent the need for more extensive treatment in the future, so we encourage you to bring your child to our dentists for their orthodontic screening.

Orthodontics for Teenagers

The teenage years are an ideal time for orthodontic treatment, as your teenager’s permanent teeth have come in but their jaws can still be easily moved into their optimal positions. There are a variety of orthodontic treatment options available for your teenager, including traditional braces and Invisalign® clear aligners, and our dentists will carefully evaluate their mouth to determine which type of treatment will be most beneficial for your teenager.

Orthodontics for Adults

You are never too old to straighten your teeth. In fact, about 25% of all orthodontic patients these days are adults. Adults commonly seek orthodontic treatment to:

  • Correct bad bites
  • Correct the alignment and positions of teeth, including teeth that are crowded or spaced
  • Resolve abnormal jaw pain or pressure
  • Improve their oral health and smile

There are a variety of orthodontic treatment options for adults, including more discreet treatments such as Invisalign clear aligners. Our dentists will examine your mouth and discuss potential treatment options with you, as well as review factors that could influence your treatment, such as gum recession and bone loss, worn or missing teeth and previous incomplete orthodontic treatments. If needed, our dentists may also recommend orthognathic surgery to align the jawbones.
